Frequently asked questions

Plain answers about GST calculations and tax splits

How do I add GST to an amount?

To add GST to a price that excludes tax, multiply the net amount by the GST rate (e.g. 18%) and divide by 100. Adding this calculated tax to your net amount gives the total price payable.

How do I remove GST from an amount?

To remove GST from a tax-inclusive price, divide the total by (1 + GST rate / 100). That gives the taxable value before GST. The difference between the total and taxable value is the tax amount.

What is the difference between CGST/SGST and IGST?

When you supply goods or services within the same state (intra-state supply), GST splits equally into Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST). When supplying to another state (inter-state supply), the entire tax is levied as Integrated GST (IGST).

Which GST rates exist now?

Following the September 2025 GST rate rationalisation, standard rates are 0%, 5%, 18%, and 40%. Some essential items are taxed at 0% or 5%, most commercial goods and services are at 18%, and demerit goods are at 40%.

What does 'inclusive' mean?

An inclusive price already includes the GST amount in the figure shown to the customer. For example, a ₹1,180 item at 18% inclusive GST has a taxable value of ₹1,000 and ₹180 GST.
